Welcome and congratulations on your decision to take the nurse aide competency examination.

Introduction to the Nurse Aide I Registry and NNAAP® Examination

This handbook is designed for candidates seeking to be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry. It provides guidance on how to apply for and take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP®) examination.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has contracted with Credentia, a nationally recognized provider of assessment services to regulatory agencies and national associations, to:

  • Develop, score, and report examination results
  • Process applications
  • Schedule and administer the NNAAP® examination

The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP®)

The NNAAP® examination is a nationally standardized testing program designed to assess whether a candidate possesses the minimum competency required to become a nurse aide.

  • The program was developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN) to meet the nurse aide evaluation standards mandated by both federal and state regulations.
  • Credentia is the authorized administrator of the NNAAP® examination in North Carolina.

Examination Components

The NNAAP® consists of two parts:

  1. Written (or Oral) Examination
  2. Skills Evaluation

The purpose of the NNAAP® examination is to ensure that candidates understand and can safely perform the responsibilities of an entry-level nurse aide.
